Blackjack Strategy
Blackjack is a game of mathematics. Since you are playing against a dealer, who is following a very strict set of house rules, rather than against other players who may do things on a whim, the way to play winning blackjack is not to be a master of psychology, but rather a master of strategy. Winning blackjack players employ a system, grounded firmly in mathematics, that they follow closely.Most likely you have heard of counting cards, as the idea has become very popular and essentially common knowledge in recent times. This is not really how to win at blackjack on the internet. Unfortunately because this is so well known, casinos have found ways to combat it, and all online casinos will use either multiple decks of cards or a continuous shuffle, which renders card counting useless. This means the one way to decrease the house edge in blackjack is to follow an optimal set of rules, developed through computer simulations and known as basic strategy.

Blackjack Basic Strategy Chart
The following chart outlines the strategy you should follow, developed from Lance Humble's The World's Greatest Blackjack Book, and is explained in detail below. It is very important that you are familiar with this chart to the point that you make the correct action automatically, so you can play optimal, winning blackjack, even when distracted. As such, it may be wise to bookmark this page or save the chart to your computer for future viewing.
- A hand is "soft" if it contains an Ace which can be used as 11 without the total of the hand being over 21. Otherwise it is hard.
- The column on the left is the card dealer is showing. Based on that, look across and see if you have either a soft or a hard hand which should be doubled down, according to the next two columns.
- If you do not, look at the last two columns. If your hand is equal or greater than the value shown, then you should stand. Otherwise you should hit.
- The middle column shows which pairs you should split on, based on the dealer's holding.
- If surrender plays are allowed, 16 should be surrendered when the dealer shows 9, 10 or Ace, and 15 should be surrendered when the dealer shows a 10.
